MARLA WILLIAMS LIMESTONE COUNTY TEACHER OF THE YEAR
Tuesday, December 01, 2009

Congratulations, Mrs. Williams, for being selected Limestone County's Teacher of the Year!!!

From Mrs. Williams:

Let me begin by thanking the faculty and staff at Owens for awarding me this honor.  I've been a teacher in Limestone County since 1990 and all but three of those years have been at Owens Elementary School.  This school is my second home and I absolutely love working here.  Our students are a wonderfully mixed bunch of eager individuals and you could say the same of our faculty.  My place at Owens is to provide my students with a proper education that will enable them to be productive citizens.  This involves presenting a challenging curriculum and setting high expectations for all students.  Teachers have a very important and difficult role in a child's life and we take that role seriously.  We do our best every day to ensure that each child finds success, but we can not do that without the support of the parents at home.  I encourage each parent to ask your child about their day.  Look in their backpack, check their folders, or simply ask them what they learned today.  Encourage your child to behave at school.  A teacher can not do their job effectively if they have to stop class because of children who have difficulty with self-control.  While we are here for all students, some demand more attention than others and it is simply not fair to take away perfectly good teaching time from students who are here to learn to discipline students who are here to misbehave.  Imagine the learning process that could take place in the classroom where all students are motivated and ready to learn!  If we work together productively, we can make great strides forward in providing a wonderfully challenging educational experience for all students.  Thank you for the honor of being the Owens Elementary School 2010 Teacher of the Year.
